Concept art for The Three Musketeers 3D by Ulrich Zeidler
Ulrich Zeidler worked as a concept artist on the feature film "The Three Musketeers 3D"The film was produced by Constantin Film and is based on the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. The story is now told for the first time in 3D.
For the production Ulrich worked remotely from his studio at home and talked about his images via Skype with the production designer Paul Austerberry. He streamed his screen so they could both look at his Photoshop interface while developing a sketch. For most of the images there was some kind of more or less rough 3D model provided by either the PD or one of his art directors. The Calais Harbor had some location photographs in bright sunshine as a basis. The location was on dry land. The belowdecks and the weapons were created from scratch. One of the Cardinal's ships was done from scratch as well. The challenge here was that the forecastle section in both ships had to be the same dimensions although the ships themselves were of vastly different size. This was because the studio setpiece was to be re-used and re-decorated.
